FTSE seeks Compass bearing

FTSE 100 shares have sent the index down about 20 points to 5,039 this morning.

Compass, the catering group, has shed 8.50p to 255.50p. Reuters Group is currently trading 11.75p lower at 396p. The company said group sales fell for a third year to £2.89bn pounds in 2004 from £3.24bn. BHP Billiton has reported that its first-half profit more than doubled to a record $2.8bn. The mining firm has added 19.50p to 714p, boosting other companies in the sector. Antofagasta is up 13p to 1,343p, along with Anglo American, up 12p to 1,334p. Xstrata has added 8.50p to 1,045.50p.
