BBA campaign sparks record dormant account claims

An awareness drive by the British Bankers' Association (BBA) has increased claims for dormant accounts to 200,000.

The BBA received 8,500 claims in July and August, more than the total for 2006, as customers found forgotten assets worth between £350m and £500m. Angela Knight, chief executive of the BBA, says: “Even if you've forgotten the money, it’s still yours – so pick up the phone, or get online. "It doesn't matter how old the account is, how little money is in it, or even if the branch or bank has closed.” BBA says the top reasons for dormant account claims include moving house and forgetting to tell the bank, finding old bank books when someone goes into care or dies and thinking the sums in...
