The Government has blueprinted its plans to set the retirement age at 65 and implement it by 2006.

This forms part of a new European Employment Directive unveiled by Trade and Industry secretary Patricia Hewitt, and Work and Pensions secretary Alan Johnson. Proposals also set out to curb age discrimination in the workplace and in vocational training, as well as establishing the right for employees to request working beyond a compulsory retirement age, which employers will have a duty to consider.
