Proposals for a European Directive forcing insurance companies to offer similar contract rates to men and women could tip more pensioners into poverty says the Pensions Policy Institute.
In a written submission to the House of Lords Select Committee on the proposed Directive on Equal Treatment between men and women, the PPI says implementation would NOT benefit most women. Instead, the Institute suggests, more pensioners are likely to get lower retirement incomes than would get increases, including women who depend upon spouses' pension in retirement. The PPI's figures suggest more than three times as many pensioners could see their retirement incomes drop than would benefit from higher ones.
