Standard Chartered creates FTSE slide

The FTSE 100 Index has shed 13.4 points to 4,840.7 at its close.

The UK benchmark was eventually led by bank Standard Chartered - whose main listings are held on the London Stock Exchange and in Hong Kong - which closed down 24.50p to 928.5p, after spending $3.3bn on buying Korea’s third largest bank to preserve its position in Asia’s third biggest banking market. Cairn Energy also shed 22p to 1048p but after a poor start, betting firm William Hill eventually closed up 15.5p to 561p after reporting its punters have done better than the firm might have preferred.
