FTSE hits low for the week

In the UK the FTSE has remained steady after an early morning fall, closing the day 53.80 points lower to 4,891.60 points at its close.

Steel firm Corus leads the benchmark, shedding 2.25p to 50.50p, with analysts pointing to a drop in base metal prices for the decline in the mining sector. Copper miner Antogagasta, also shed 50p or 4% to 11.50p. Money firm Amvescap, lost 12.50p to 316.50p, while hedge fund firm, Man Group lost 47p to 13.43p. On the other end of the scale, medical stocks in AstraZeneca advanced 43p to 22.84p, along with GlaxoSmithKline up 12p to £12.65, after a favourable court ruling in the States regarding a patent for Eli Lilly's drugs.
