FTSE hangs tough to pull back slightly

The FTSE 100 Index has closed around 10 points higher to 4933.5 points, thanks largely to Alliance UniChem.

The drugs distributor and retailer has added 20p to 780p, while BskyB added 14p to 577.50p, after analysts forecasted higher subscriber figures for the broadcast firm. Gus also increased its shares by 16.5p to 921.5p, after a weekend report suggested it might bring forward the demerger of financial information arm Experian before the end of the year. Cruise Liner outfit Carnival meanwhile, shed as much as 134p to £29.21, after announcing profit for this quarter's will fall shy of analysts estimates.
