The FTSE 100 index reversed the downward slide of recent days and close 4 points higher at 5057.4 after Reed Elsevier announced its full-year profits.
The publisher rose 37.25p or 7.5% in value to 533.50p by close of business in London, as the firm announced it is confident of strong growth in 2005. Cairn Energy also advanced after reporting upbeat prospects for its main Indian assets. The energy firm eventually gained 64p or 6% to £11.30, having suffered losses over three days. Mobile brand MM02 was also a good earner, adding 4.25p to 129.75p.
