The FTSE 100 index closed a fraction lower by close of business on Wednesday paced by Imperial Tobacco Group.
The benchmark shed 5.6 points to 4818.3 points, while Imperial Tobacco leaked 55p or 3.7% to 1395p. Owner of the Financial Times, Pearson Group also lost 17.50p to 620p after the company reported its earnings per share would be at the low end of analysts expectations. As part of the group, Penguin reported a ‘tough’ festive season. Rival publishing house Emap, meanwhile, picked up 25p to 835p. In the US, the Dow Jones has lost heavily in morning trading. The New York benchmark has slipped 46.2 points to 10582.59 points, led by IBM, which is currently down $1.41 to $93.49. IFAonline
