Gay day for civil partnerships

New law will require a new tack from advisers helping clients sort out wills, tax-planning and pre-nuptual agreements in line with the just passed Civil Partnership Act.

Royal Assent of the Act – which snuck through last week while pensions and hunting hogged the limelight – means gay and lesbian couples will be able to live under a new legal status, which recognises their relationship rights and responsibilities in a similar way to married heterosexual couples. Julian Washington, solicitor with law firm Forsters, says advisers will need to take heed of some of the differences the Act offers against legislation recognising married couples.
