Skandia has launched an educational fantasy fund football game for consumers with a total prize fund of £25,000 up for grabs.
The game, which kicks off on 7 December, has been endorsed by the Financial Skills Partnership and uses football as a medium for helping people understand the essentials of building and monitoring an investment portfolio.
Under the rules of the online game, ‘team managers' will build, manage and monitor a team of funds representing attackers, midfielders, defenders and substitutes. The goalkeeper represents cash.
Initially £10,000 will be alllocated to the goalkeeper and £9,000 to each of the 10 outfield players. Team managers then choose their starting line up of 10 investment funds and select an additional six as substitutes.
Each team has £100,000 of virtual money and the end goal is to have the highest total fund value at the end of the main game on April 6, 2012.
Team managers can design their own kit and badge and select their ‘players' from a range of over 400 funds. They can also create their own mini leagues and challenge family, friends or colleagues to compete.
The overall prize fund is £25,000, including an individual prize of £15,000 for the best performing team manager, £3,000 for second place and £1,500 for third place.
There is also £1,500 up for grabs for the winning mini league, a £500 monthly prize for best performer, along with 18 other cash prizes.
It will shortly be available on Facebook and mobile applications.
"This is an exciting and fun game for people to play, with an underlying educational element, helping people understand more about building and monitoring an investment portfolio," said Jeremy Mugridge, Skandia's head of digital marketing.
