FTSE up with TUI Travel leading

In London, markets rose in early trading and the FTSE 100 was up 25.3 points (0.39%) to 6,504.6.

TUI Travel, the owner of Thompson Holidays, added 6 points (2.06%) to 297.75p as record numbers of people left the UK for Christmas, while Whitbread gained 27 points (2%) to £13.75. Group 4 Securicor shares lost 6.75 points (2.77%) to 237.25p, while Carnival dropped 43 points (1.89%) to £22.27. On Wall Street, markets closed slightly higher on Christmas Eve, up 2.36% (0.02%) to 13,551.69 as banks became optimistic about the outlook for 2008.
