Back in the 1980s Ian Chimes was writing children's books and football annuals - an occupation as far removed as you could imagine from the cut and thrust of running a fund management business. But the enforced change of career is something he has never regretted. "The publisher I worked for was one of the casualties of the economic slump in the 80s and I found myself moving to the financial services world initially in sales with Abbey."
