As many as 10 million immigrants may be needed in the UK by 2025 to prevent a pension crisis, new research reveals.
This is the only way pensioners can expect to receive their current £80 a week level of basic state pension, according to Cass Business School in London. The researchers have developed mathematical models highlighting various likely pension scenarios facing the UK. One of these says that if UK citizens continue to retire at the same age, with no increase in national insurance contributions, static productivity levels and increased longevity, it will be impossible to raise the real value of the state pension.
