An additional 20,000 "community support officers" will complement some 138,000 police officers across England and Wales by 2008 to help reduce crime, chancellor Gordon Brown says.
Matching efforts involving, for example, the Department of the Deputy Prime Minister's office and the £525m annually committed to the "neighbourhood renewal fund" will tackle the causes of crime, Brown adds. As a result, the Home Office budget increases from £12.7bn to £14.9bn, an increase of £2.2bn or 4% annually on average every year through the spending review period.
