The latest figures from the major banking groups show that in August lending to private individuals rose by £5.9bn. Credit card borrowing increased by £361m during the month, above the average underlying rise of £260m in the previous six months. Total deposits in August increased by just £0.5bn, up by 0.1% to £605bn. This was the smallest increase since December 2001, when there was a net outflow of £0.1bn.
