Investing in stocks and leaving those investments to benefit savings over the medium to longer term seems to have lost its edge. No better example is apparent than the past year where we have had periods of extreme volatility and high risk as a consequence of the euro crisis. If we look at the S&P 500 or the FTSE 100, these indices experienced both bull and bear phases with swings of almost 20% ending the period almost where they began.
