Figures provided by Overture, part of online search engine company Yahoo!, indicate just what a surprise his appointment as work and pensions secretary may be - or not for those in the know.
The number of searches on his name in the week leading to the election was up about 90% compared with the first week of April. However, Overture also says that the total numbers of searches for both periods on the words ‘David Blunkett’ were a fraction of the number searching the words ‘Tony Blair’. In the first week of April 24 times as many searches were done on the prime minister’s name, rising to 43 times in the last week of the election campaign.
