MPs launch post-Budget auto-enrolment inquiry

MPs have launched an inquiry into the progress of auto-enrolment after the shock changes to the pension system announced in the Budget.

The Work and Pensions Committee said it would investigate the "changed context" for the policy, stemming from proposals to change pension taxation arrangements and introduce defined ambition (DA) pensions. Auto-enrolment of employees in workplace pensions started in October 2012. At the time, the government had in mind occupational defined contribution (DC) schemes, but lawmakers are now looking at alternatives, such as DA and collective DC schemes, in the Pension Schemes Bill 2014, introduced in June.
