Anyone using a strategic bond fund in their portfolios needs to understand whether the fund's characteristics are well-suited to the objectives and type of outcome they are seeking, writes Gill Hutchison

Strategic bond funds come in all shapes and sizes, which means the Investment Association's Sterling Strategic Bond sector can be one of the more difficult fund groupings to navigate. Any attempt to squeeze funds into narrowly-defined categories can create more problems than it solves. On the other side of the coin, the investment approach taken by managers within sectors can be diverse, resulting in a variety of investment journeys from differing funds.
