Major investors in insurance companies are already aware of a significant ruling made last March by the European Court of Justice.

Others may need ‘reminding’, as its implications are considerable. From December 21st, 2012 UK insurers will be breaking the law if they price their products based on gender. No matter how vociferously some may previously have argued that ample evidence warrants the different treatment of men and women, their cause has been demolished. A provision in the 2004 EU Gender Directive had once permitted insurers to opt out of its requirements, but a successful challenge by the Belgian Consumer Association means that they too now have to abide by the rules.
