HMRC to close 170 tax offices

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is reportedly planning to close 170 regional tax offices in a bid to cut hundreds of millions of pounds from its budget.

HMRC wants replace the offices with 13 new regional tax centres, according to the Daily Telegraph. The newspaper said the plan would leave towns and cities across the country without a tax office and was likely to lead to thousands of HMRC's 56,000 staff being made redundant. As a result of the cuts there would be no tax office in south west England west of Bristol, and little or no coverage in East Anglia, according to the report.
