Queen confirms Pensions Bill reading

The Queen has confirmed plans for an overhaul of the UK state pension system in the upcoming Pensions Bill.

In her annual speech before the state opening of parliament, the monarch said the government "will bring forward legislation to create a simpler state pension system that encourages saving and provides more help to those who have spent years caring for children". It is expected to include a proposal to raise the state pension age to 67, as well as a single-tier pension of £144 per week, replacing a £107 payment plus mean-tested top-ups.
