Sale and rentback scheme need statutory regulation to improve consumer protection, says the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

The controversial sector, which guarantees to buy homes from struggling owners and rent them to their original occupants, has been subject to a study by the OFT in recent months, with the results published today. The OFT has recommended the Government step in to regulate the sector as many firms have been found to mislead customers. It found many consumers were told they would be able to live in their property for years after the deal was complete, when in reality they only had the security of a six or twelve-month assured shorthold tenancy (AST).
