In this latest Working Lunch from Professional Adviser, Baillie Gifford investment specialist director Ben James explored why the US remains the world's most innovative country, the impact of market concentration, and how identifying transformative companies early can drive long-term growth and portfolio success.

During this digital event recorded on 15 January, Baillie Gifford discussed why the US is the most innovative country in the world and creates more great growth companies than any other country combined.

Yet, its stock market indices are currently at record levels of concentration with just seven companies, the ‘Magnificent 7', accounting for over a third of the S&P 500 index and over half of the Russell 1000 Growth index.

Combine this with the noise around AI, inflation, valuations and politics, Baillie Gifford said it is easy to lose sight of the true drivers of long-term returns, adding the reality is that a small group of exceptional growth companies harnessing powerful societal changes are the ones that produce outsized gains - and eventually become the mega-cap leaders of tomorrow.

In this session, Ben James explored market concentration and the Baillie Gifford American fund, including how it identifies transformative companies early and invests in them with conviction to capture their asymmetric returns.

He focused on the influential changes happening in the US today that the group believes will fuel the next generation of winners and discussed how this high-conviction, growth-oriented approach positioned to benefit from the mega caps of the future can enhance a diversified portfolio.
