The vast majority of divorcees do not have a financial adviser, writes Sarah French, despite the fact this is precisely the time they should have access to such services - and advisers should actively seek to be involved

In the two decades since pension sharing was introduced in 2000, some two million couples have divorced. Many of these divorcees will have ended up walking away with sizeable assets and little, if anything, in the way of financial advice. In 2017 there were just over 100,000 divorces in England and Wales - a figure broadly comparable with the year before. Of these, the divorce rate for opposite-sex couples was highest among men aged 45 to 49 years and women aged 40 to 44 years.
