Platform consultancy the lang cat has questioned whether private equity firms are underestimating the complexity of consolidating platforms, as its latest platform paper discusses the impact of recent M&A activity.

In the consultancy's annual State of the Platform Nation Guide, platform ownership in the private equity world has increased by 13 percentage points over the past five years, now standing at 15% compared to 2% in 2016. On the other hand, life company share of the market, which the lang cat pointed out is still predominantly through Aviva and Aegon, also showed a decrease in assets under administration (AUA), down to 17% this year compared to a higher number of 55% five years ago.
