Opperman becomes second-longest serving pensions minister

Guy Opperman has become the second-longest serving dedicated junior pensions minister, overtaking Labour's Malcolm Wicks.

In a post known for its short tenures, Opperman has now served 695 consecutive days in office since he was appointed as pensions and financial inclusion minister on 14 June 2017, passing Wicks who held the role between June 2003 and May 2005. The dedicated pensions post was created under Labour in 1998 when John Denham was appointed minister for pensions. In 2005, it was retitled as minister for pensions reform, before returning to minister for pensions in 2010, and adding ‘financial inclusion' when Opperman came into office.
