Triple lock 'increasingly unfair' - Ros Altmann

'New approach to state pension needed'

The triple lock is a "political gimmick" that does not properly protect the oldest and poorest pensioners, according to former pensions minister Ros Altmann.

Writing in her blog, Altmann (pictured) noted: "Politicians have been using the triple lock as a lazy way of claiming to offer pensioners brilliant protection. However, it is increasingly unfair." She explained that, in light of the new state pension system that started April 2016, older pensioners who are on the old state pension would only have the basic state pension protected - a maximum of roughly £120 per week. Younger pensioners, however, have the full new state pension of nearly £160 per week, which, argued Altmann, leaves the oldest and poorest pensioners at a disadvantage. F...
