No-go from govt on women's state pension demands

Backbench motion debated in House of Commons

The government has rejected calls for more help for women hit particularly hard by state pension equalisation, despite a backbench motion calling for transitional arrangements receiving unanimous backing in parliament.

Because it was on a backbench motion, the 7 January debate placed no obligation on the government to take action. The motion, tabled by Scottish National Party MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, Mhairi Black welcomed equalisation of the state pension age between men and women, but expressed regret that the measure "directly discriminates against women born on or after 6 April 1951".
