Iceland's former PM on trial over financial crisis

Iceland's parliament has voted to send former Prime Minister Geir Haarde to court over his role in the financial crisis.

The former leader could face up to two years imprisonment if he is convicted for negligence, after a report commissioned by parliament showed more could have been done to mitigate the damage done by the collapse of the Icelandic banks in 2008. Haarde says: "This charge borders on political persecution," and points out the prime minister Johanna Sigurdardottir and foreign minister Ossur Skarphedinsson have not been referred to court, the BBC reports.
