New flood map targets homeowners

The Environment Agency has launched its most detailed map yet for homeowners to assess the flooding risk associated with their properties in England and Wales.

Available online, the map will offer a 'low', 'moderate', or 'significant' risk assessment based on proximity to rivers, the coast, and whether flood protection defences are in place. Benefits include far higher accuracy than its predecessor, including some 35% more mapped rivers, and inclusion of previously excluded extremely flood-prone areas. Some 100,000 properties have been cut from the previous 1.8 million unit estimate of houses with a 1-in-100 risk of flooding becuase of refinements to the mapping.
