Partnership MD Care Chris Horlick says headline figures that 20,000 people are selling their homes to fund care is just the tip of the iceberg.

The scandal is not that 20,000 people are selling their homes to fund their care, it is that so many people then run out of funds because they fail to get appropriate financial advice, and fall back on the state. Last year, out of the 53,000 self-funders who went into care, only 7,000 received appropriate financial advice. We estimate that this will cost local authorities nearly £1bn in England alone each year. We also believe that politicians are out of touch with the majority of over-50-year-olds on this issue.
