Warning issued to advisers over SSAS maladministration

Standards 'down since 2006'

'Be aware who administers the SSASs you advise on,' warned Talbot and Muir director David Bonnywell, who said he has reviewed several schemes that have been engaged in maladministration.

Bonnywell said it was "in the best interests of advisers" to undertake a thorough due diligence process when looking at a potential small self-administered scheme (SSAS) administrator because, if clients were unhappy with the service level provided by the administrator, it would not reflect well on the adviser. "Fees and value for money [the administrators] provide are key factors for clients, and are quite often not fully understood," he explained.
