Steer explains top performance

NEW Star's Tim Steer believes his accounting background has helped his UK Alpha fund reach top decile on the fifth anniversary of its launch.

He believes his experience as an accountant helps him avoid problem companies and track down those with good earnings visibility and strong cash flow. Steer said he owed his analytical skills to his accountancy experience but also thinks time working on the “sell side” as a broker has proved invaluable too. The fund, which is in the IMA UK All Companies sector, is currently overweight building and construction and has a big position in companies involved in outsourcing as well as defence stocks.
