It's often regarded as one of the most underpaid taxes yet capital gains tax (CGT) generated £8.38bn for the government last year - despite the reduction in CGT rates and increase in the annual exemption.  Overall, CGT was 60% higher than IHT receipts, a tax which attracts far more column inches and advice.
