Recognising advisers are now people who run businesses that offer advice, rather than being advisers who happen to have a business, will help the profession to keep improving, according to Cathi Harrison.
Historically, the Para-Sols founder and director argues, advisers simply ran a business around their advice. However, she adds, the shift in the profession now means advisers are business owners and their job within the business is being an adviser.
"It's a very different mind-set to have," she explains. "You make different decisions with the business that affects the decisions you make with the clients, the proposition you have, the servicing you give, making sure what you're doing is profitable - it can affect everything."
Harrison is the latest Adviser Champion to appear in Professional Adviser's series of video interviews, which has most recently featured former Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) technichal specialist turned consultant Rory Percival, RSMR's Geoff Mills and iShares' Joe Parkin.
Asked a classic question from the series - what she would do if she were head of the FCA for a day - Harrison jokes she would hire back Percival.
More seriously, she goes on to say she would mandate everyone who works at the regulator to receive financial advice at some point and to act, at least once, as an adviser so they had been through the process from both perspectives.
Those two perspectives, combined with their existing viewpoint in the FCA, would help give the watchdog a different perception of the profession it regulates, she says.
