In this week's Investment Influencers video interview, profiling the most respected individuals who select funds, decide ratings or otherwise influence the allocation of investor fund flows, we chat to Ruli Viljoen.
Viljoen is head of manager selection for Morningstar's Investment Management group in the EMEA region. In this role, she is responsible for driving the research efforts of the investment team to ensure best ideas are reflected in the Morningstar client portfolios and client panels, as well as ensuring there is a ‘buy' list of suitable alternative funds at all times.
In addition, Viljoen is involved in the management of a number of key client relationships and is also a member of a number of Morningstar's internal committees, including the Investment Committee and the Portfolio Review Committee. She joined Morningstar in 2010 through the company's acquisition of OBSR, where she had worked since 2009.
In all, Viljoen, who holds a B.Soc.Sc in economics, with honours, from the University of Cape Town as well as the Investment Management Certificate and the Investment Advice Certificate, has worked in the UK fund research industry since 1996 and the investment industry since 1987.
Prior to joining OBSR, she managed the long-only fund of funds portfolios for TriAlpha Investment Advisors, a London-based asset management group. She was previously a private client relationship manager for Nedcor Investment Group, a private banking organisation based in South Africa.
The Investment Influencers series, which has most recently featured James Bateman of Fidelity, James McGuire of UBS and James Klempster of Momentum, offers insights into how key players in the asset management sector see the world of investing and expect to deal with such challenges as greater market volatility, increased regulation and a growing trend towards short-termism.
