The Office for National Statistics says 2007 is the year when the number of UK pensioners overtakes the number of children under the age of 16, a gap that is expected to reach 2 million people by 2025 according to new forecasts made on 2000 population figures. The change will also see the number of pensioners increase more than 10% in the next ten years, roughly double the increase in the number of people of working age during that time.
