UK house prices increased by 2% in April and by 4.4% in the first four months of 2006, according to the latest Halifax House Price Index.
The report showed Scottish towns dominated the top 10 property hotspots in the UK. Cufar in Fife was number one with a 36% rise in prices over the past year, followed by Lochgelly, Coatbridge and Lanark. There were only six towns out of the 392 surveyed which had an average price below £100,000 in quarter one of 2006, compared with 134 in the same period in 2003. However, Halifax predicted higher utility and council tax bills to lead to house price growth moderating in the second half of 2006.
