Bupa International has won a contract to provide a bespoke international health insurance product for the majority of Shell's expatriate employees and their dependants. It has also teamed up with United Arab Emirates (UAE) health insurer Oman Insurance Company (OIC) and will sell products through its sales force and network of brokers.
In the UAE, OIC will become the local insurer for Bupa, and Bupa will continue to provide customer services and get support from its offices in the UK.
Bupa won the Shell contract in April 2003, following a nine-month tender process. As part of the that, Bupa transformed an unnamed, bulk plan into a named plan with almost 200 sub-groups in just 12 weeks. The plan went live on 1 July 2003. Since going live, the plan has more than 12,000 individuals registered.
Features of the product include access to a 24-hour multi-lingual helpline and a website that allows members to administer aspects of their policy.
