The Van Global hedge fund index has added strategy components and futures sub-indices as the lines begin to blur between investment classes.
The Global index is made up of specialist sub-indices and Van has added four broad strategy group indices made up of these existing specialist hedge fund indices. The new strategy group indices are the Market Neutral Group, the Long/Short Equity Group, the Directional Trading Group and the Specialty Strategies Group.
Van continues to produce index results for the individual strategies in addition to the new strategy groups. As always, constituent funds are equally weighted rather than asset-weighted in each of the indices.
George Van, chairman of Van, says: "We have found that some investors and investment managers are interested in seeing not just how narrowly defined hedge fund strategies perform but also how broader strategy groups, such as Long/Short Equity, perform."
In addition to the strategy group indices, Van has added a Futures Strategy index as well as four arbitrage sub-strategy indices. The Futures Strategy index reflects the performance of about 60 futures funds/commodity pools.
Van also supplemented its Market Neutral Arbitrage Strategy index, which reflects the average performance of all types of arbitrage hedge funds, with four new arbitrage sub-strategy indices: Convertible, Fixed Income, Merger and Statistical Arbitrages.
