Nick Kirwan has joined the executive team of the Income Protection Task Force.
Kirwan, who was an associate director of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) until recently, will work with the existing IPTF team and will provide advice based on his knowledge of the political process and regulation.
The appointment will take place with immediate effect.
Peter Le Beau, the other co-chairman, said: "I have known Nick for many years and he is one of the most passionate people about protection I know."
Kirwan added: "I'm really looking forward to driving the protection agenda.
"Middle income Britain is woefully under-insured and the income protection task force is all about addressing that. Our shared vision is for individuals and families to be much more financially resilient against the impact of long-term illness".
