The government has launched an online tax calculator enabling people to work out how much tax they have paid and how it is spent.
HMRC said the tool, which is available on its website and can also be downloaded as a free mobile phone app, marks an important step towards achieving the government's goal of making the tax system more transparent and easier to understand.
The launch of the calculator comes as HMRC-commissioned research polling over 2,000 people suggested more than half of taxpayers (57%) do not know how much income tax and National Insurance they pay in a year.
HMRC said the findings suggest the public considers the personal tax system remote and confusing.
"We think it is right people know how much tax they pay and what the Government spends it on," said exchequer secretary to the Treasury David Gauke.
