Shoplifter's claim adds to record year for insurance fraud

A false insurance claim made by a shoplifter for injuries sustained in a police chase contributed to the highest level of insurance fraud last year.

Over 2,000 dishonest insurance claims worth more than £16m were detected every week in 2009, the ABI reports. In total, 122,000 fraudulent insurance claims were uncovered, up 14% on 2008. The value of these claims, at £840m, rose by 14% on the previous year. In one case, a young woman claimed to have tripped over a loose pavement, when in fact her injuries were sustained from jumping down a flight of stairs while running away from security guards on suspicion of shoplifting.
