A free service has been launched which allows firms to check whether business telephone and fax numbers are on the ‘opt-out' list from receiving direct marketing cold calls.
The www.numbercheck.co.uk website automatically checks numbers entered against both the Corporate and ‘individuals’ TPS lists to remove any chance of error.
A new law was implemented on June 25th – (see previous IFAonline story: Hot law on cold calling warning) which now requires all firms conducting "cold calls" on companies to check whether a firm has requested it be taken off the central list of businesses who choose not to receive random calls from firms.
The matter is complicated further, however, as sole traders and partnerships will be listed on the ‘individuals’ rather than ‘companies’ list.
Changes to the Electoral Register last year saw the names of all individuals placed to TWO lists which can then be sold to companies for a fee.
Any named individual who wishes to opt-out of this saleable list has to request their name is NOT added to the edited Electoral Register, which is available for general sale if their name has been on the electoral register for some time.
Since its launch earlier this month the free NumberCheck service is already being used by thousands of businesses who need to contact other businesses but cannot afford to subscribe to the TPS files, says Chris Loveys, director of MarketingFile.com.
Any firm which does not first check whether the firm or individual has opted-out could be fined £5,000 if a complaint is made.IFAonline
