Cruise ship firm Carnival helped the FTSE sail into the black on Tuesday, the blue-chip index climbing 17.9 points, or 0.32%, to 5,620.7 at the close of trading.
Carnival advanced 139p to £20.30, while Thomas Cook, up 16.75p to 246.5p, and Sainsbury also climbed.
However, John Wood Group, down 26.75p to 428.5p, Tullow Oil and Anglo American all slipped into the red.
A surge in trading has helped the Dow Jones Industrial Average climb by more than 181 points, or 1.57%, to 11,724.63 midway through Tuesday.
GEN Motors leads the winner’s table, advancing 0.74 points, or 7.4%, to 10.74, and Home Depot and Bank of America have had positive mornings.
Alcoa, Chevron and Exxon Mobil are all struggling, but losses at this stage remain minimal.
