Blunkett admits: "I made a mistake"

David Blunkett has admitted he "made a mistake" and "must pay the price for it" by not referring to the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments about the details of directorships he had undertaken after he first left office as Home Secretary.

In a statement Mr Blunkett said he had done nothing wrong adding: “I have not committed any offence that would make the Prime Minister doubt my action as a minister.” Saying he was standing down as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to “protect the government“ from any further damage from the story surrounding him, Blunkett explained he called the Prime Minister’s office at 8.00am to discuss the continuing furore surrounding his position in the government and was asked to stay by Tony Blair.
