The FTSE rose 33.8 points, or 0.57%, to 5927.4p this afternoon as publisher Reed Elsevier said it would buy data provider ChoicePoint for £2bn. The publisher rose 44 points, or 7.53%, to 628p.
Anglo American increased 102 points, or 3.23%, to 3263p as metal prices rose. Energy supplier Centrica fell 13.75 points, or 4.21%, to 313p after raising prices while reporting a 40% jump in profits at its subsidiary, British Gas. British Airways fell 10 points, or 3.55%, to 272p after pilots voted for a strike. The Dow Jones fell 18.73 points, or 0.15%, to 12408.53c as General Motors dropped 0.97 points, or 3.8%, to 24.57c. United Technologies fell 0.89 points, or 1.24%, to 71.16c. Telecoms company AT&T rose 0.62 points, or 1.8%, to 34.98c while Verizon Communications rose 0.48 points...
