Alliance & Leicester soared 42 points, or 3.74%, to 1166p. GlaxoSmithKline climbed 26 points, or 2.02%, to 1315p. Home Retail rose eight points, or 1.78%, to 458.25p. BT Group rose 5.5 points, or 1.67%, to 335.25p. British Airways rose seven points, or 1.59%, to 446.25p.
Lonmin plummeted 326 points, or 7.62%, to 3952p. BG Group fell 14 points, or 1.6%, to 863.5p. Imperial Chemical Industries fell 9.5 points, or 1.5%, to 624.5p. 3i fell 13 points, or 1.11%, to 1163p. British Energy Group dropped six points, or 1.1%, to 537.5p.
The Dow Jones rose 45.52 points, or 0.33% on Friday afternoon to close at 13907.25c.
Alcoa rose 2.06%, or 4.55%, to 47.35c. United Technologies rose 1.01 points, or 1.37%, to 75c. Caterpillar rose 1.04 points, or 1.24%, to 85.13c. Boeing rose 1.1 points, or 1.09%, to 101.88c. JPMorgan Chase & Co rose 0.52 points, or 1.05%, closing at 50.05c.
General Motors dropped 0.51 points, or 1.36%, to 37.03c. Microsoft fell 0.25 points, or 0.83%, to 29.82c. American Express fell 0.5 points, or 0.79%, to 62.83c. International Business Machines fell 0.68 points, or 0.62%, to 108.6c. Altria Group fell 0.37 points, or 0.51%, to 71.7c.
